CarbonX™ CF ABS ~ Carbon Fibre Reinforced ABS 3D Filament
CarbonX™ CFR-ABS is a high-performance carbon fibre reinforced ABS filament ideal for anyone that desires a structural component with high modulus, excellent surface quality, dimensional stability, light weight, and ease of printing. Made using 15% High-Modulus Carbon Fibre (not carbon powder or milled carbon fibre). Made in the USA using premium Sabic MG-94 ABS and high modulus carbon fibre.
Recommended Print Conditions:
Extruder: 220-240°C. 3DXMAX™ CFR is a filled product and has a higher melt viscosity vs. unfilled resin. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to print at higher temperatures to allow the resin to flow properly.
Bed Temp: 100-110°C
Bed Prep: Kapton Tape, ABS/Acetone Slurry – PrintBite – 3DLAC - DIMAFIX
Nozzle: We currently recommend minimum 0.4mm orifice.
Layer Height: Ideal layer height is 60% of nozzle diameter. We do not recommend printing layers below 0.25mm with carbon fibre grades. Lower than 0.25mm may create too much back pressure in the hot end and result in poor feeding, jams, drive gear clicking, and eating a notch into the filament.
Drying Instructions: Please see the following instructions for when you want to dry out this filament, though more for Nylons, PEEKS, etc..
CF ABS - 80c Max temp - Drying Duration 2-4 hours
Max drying temp: Important - this temperature should not be exceeded without risking the deformation of the filament, reel, or both.
Drying duration: This of course depends on how wet the material is. If it has been sitting out for several weeks or months, then you may need to dry it longer to drive out the moisture. High-temp materials like PEKK, PEEK, and PEI may need to be dried longer since they are slow to pick up moisture, but also slow to give moisture up when drying.
Nylon: Anyone who prints with nylon knows how fast it can pick up moisture and what this does to the quality of your printing. We recommend 90°C and at least 4 hours to dry nylon, but this is a starting point. Saturated nylon may take 24+ hours to dry enough to make decent prints. Keep the material in a dry place while printing and between print jobs to make drying easier.
Over-drying Nylon: One thing to note is that over-drying nylon can be more difficult to dry and handle. Nylon actually likes a little bit of moisture in it or it will be brittle and more difficult to process. Printing with nylon is so much fun!
Vacuum oven: The use of a vacuum oven is of course helpful, but not necessary. Any oven that heats the filament up to the recommended temp is generally suitable. There are several filament 'dryers' on the market, but even a simple toaster oven can dry the filament between uses.
Ventilation: It's always a great idea to make sure you have proper ventilation in your printing environment - whether during printing or drying filament - to assure good air quality while processing these plastic materials.
Smoke and Fire Detection: Please make sure you have a smoke detector in any environment where you are printing. You are processing plastic materials and many of them are flammable and all exude some vapours during printing.

Very nice results
Very nice results. You have to slow down on this one though. I HIGHLY recommend a steel nozzle also. You will need to adjust your support structure settings. Over all though, excellent filament and strong.
Very pleased with ease of use and vapor-smoothed appearance
I was pleasantly surprised at how forgiving this filament is with my 0.4mm nozzle, even when going well below the recommended layer height. One project had some very gradual ramps and I was able to print at 0.1mm without jams. Smoothing with acetone vapor resulted in an almost metallic-looking sheen. Sweet!
Overall excellent ABS material, Great adhesion and not too much warping from my experience so far. I've been getting excellent prints out of this material. It is somewhat brittle off the roll but the finished parts definitely seem strong.
