    More Details

FIREWIRE® PPSU (PPSF) Natural 1.75mm 250gms spool.  Polyphenylsulfone (PPSF or PPSU) is a high-temperature aromatic sulfone polymer.  Long considered to be one of the highest performance polymers in the plastics world.  PPSF has excellent thermal and chemical resistance, making it well suited for demanding applications in automotive, aerospace, electronics, defense, industrial, medical, semi-con applications. Previously only available to Stratasys® customers - now you can print with this ultra performance polymer.

Attributes of Firewire® Polyphenylsulfone PPSF (PPSU) include:

    • Very high thermal properties with a Tg of 220°C and HDT of 205°C
    • Excellent hydrolytic resistance
    • High Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR)
    • Outstanding impact resistance
    • Highly resistant to gamma radiation - even in large doses (10 Mrd)
    • Sterilization capable - including EtO gas, radiation, steam autoclaving, plasma, dry heat and cold sterilization.
    • Resists most common automotive fluids, including gasoline, antifreeze, transmission fluid, motor oil, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid (ESCR, 24hrs, 100°C)
    • Inherently flame retardant with low smoke evolution and low smoke toxicity
    • Excellent dimensional stability (low creep sensitivity and low, uniform coefficient of thermal expansion) and highly reproducible part-to-part dimensions
    • Exceptional strength and modulus, even at elevated temperatures

    Filament Specifications:

    • Diameter:  1.75mm (+/- 0.05mm)
    • Color:  Natural / Slight Yellow Cast
    • Density:  1.29g/cm3

    Recommended Print Conditions: (starting points)

    • Extruder Temp: 360 - 390°C (all-metal extruder)
    • Bed Temp: 140-160°C though packaging displays 110-120°C - see recommendations below
    • Bed Prep: Ultem® Tape, Polyimide Tape, Lightly sanded FR4 or Perf board.
    • Other:  No cooling fan, Print speeds of 1000mm/min (starting point).  We recommend printing within a heated enclosure or in a warm build environment.

Annealing Printed Parts:  If needed, PPSF parts printed on an open source / desktop 3D printer may be annealed in a hot-air oven to reduce any printed-in stresses that may be present in the part.  Printed-in stresses may occur in any plastic and may result in lower than expected mechanical properties.  If this is an issue with your part, then you can follow the simple 5-step ramp up/down process for annealing your parts.

Step 1:  Place printed parts in cool, room-temp oven.
Step 2.  Set temp to 300°F and allow to stabilize for 1 hour.
Step 3:  After 1 hour at 300°F, increase oven temp to 400°F and allow to stabilize 1 additional hour.
Step 4:  After 1 hour at 400°F, reduce heat back to 300°F and allow to stabilize for 30 minutes.
Step 5:  After 30 minutes, turn off oven heat and allow printed parts to return to room temp inside the oven as it cools.

USA Customer reviews of FIREWIRE® PPSU (PPSF)

Great material for hot water applications

    • I began using PPSU for a project for handling hot water flow. PEI (Ultem) will become brittle over time with extended contact with hot water, but I haven't had any issue with PPSU yet. This material took a lot of drying time in an oven at 115C before printing well. I was able to make it stick to glass at 160C with a Kores glue stick. I print at 385C to 365C depending on the layer features. Great layer to layer bonding in my 90C chamber. When the filament is fully dried, the prints have a semi-transparent light amber color.

Really tough filament comparable to ultem1010

    • First tried getting it stick to bed at 160 C but this thing needs 170C, on a high gloss ultem sheet, after that print was smooth, you can print at about 35-40mm/s without loosing finish, these parts can be machined and buffed similar to metals, with a nice finish, overall again a tough filament, and thanks for 3dxtech for making it available for us, this opens new frontiers for us.
